Using symbols and accents when creating assignments

Firefly supports different language alphabets, accents and a range of symbols. These can be used by teachers and students in normal Firefly pages and also in creating questions and answers on assignments and other marked work pages.

If you already have practised methods for using languages and symbols on your computer, whether that's using keyboard shortcuts or a foreign language keyboard, the same methods should work with Firefly too. We've also put together a few libraries of symbols and some handy ways of using them.

For accents, try copying and pasting from the following table of characters. This table could be pasted into the top of a marked work page and used both when creating and answering questions.

ÀÂÄÈÉÊËÎÏÔŒÙÛÜŸ
àâäèéêëîïôœùûüÿ
Çç«»

You can also use characters from other alphabets, such as Cyrillic or Arabic, in the same way you would in any other application - give it a try!

Maths, Science & Music

Here are some symbols that might be useful in other non-language subjects. Copy and paste characters as required.

We have also provided some shortcuts when setting and answering marked work in order to be able to quickly use superscripts and subscripts.

  • Superscript - type in 3^2 and Firefly will display it as 3²
  • Subscript - type in Na_2 and Firefly will display it as Na₂
  • Arrows - try the following substitutions:

Superscript, subscript and arrow shortcuts can only be used when setting or answering questions.
